Selena
She was an artist, creator, performer and also set new boundaries in the music world. She was an Mexican American singer who was traditional yet modern. She brought both cultures together and helped bring Tejano music into the mainstream. It was an emerging star who's tragic death threw it into turmoil. And as is common when a brilliant, genial young performer is lost too quickly people mourn the possibilities she was yet to achieve. Fans have struggled through the years to preserve her legacy. Her tragic death in a shooting caused a reaction in the Latino community that was similar to reactions following the deaths of Elvis Presley or John Lennon. Selena was a hugely popular Latino singer across North America. Her music transcended boundaries and touched the hearts of both young people and older adults. Selena may have been hailed by some as an Latina Madonna, however she's still a fantastic character model. Selena's family values off stage and her participation in AIDS awareness campaigns are exemplary.
